Erin is the editorial director at Pocket Outdoor Media, publisher of Triathlete, Women’s Running, PodiumRunner, VeloNews, and Bicycle Retailer and Industry News. She is also the editor in chief of Triathlete Magazine and a former digital staff writer and fitness editor at Outside Magazine. Erin is excited and nervous for the day her two baby girls can read her first book, Off Course: Inside the Mad, Muddy World of Obstacle Course Racing.

In this session, media industry veterans Liz Hichens and Erin Beresini will teach you how to break into publishing, craft stories that get peoples' attention, and grow your audience. Whether you're creating content for personal fulfillment, for a living, or for your brand, these skills are essential. You'll swim-bike-run away from this exclusive session with a greater understanding of the media business, the art of pitching and storytelling, and how to gauge your own success as a storyteller.

    An opportunity for attendees to share a 3-5 minute story, poem, song, any kind of triathlon-related performance! Last year's participants blew everyone away with their originality and courage, presenting songs, poetry, and a soliloquy. The floor is open for anyone who'd like to perform.

    How women, trans athletes, and gender non-binary athletes of all racial identities and abilities are represented in the media shapes how we understand their experience in triathlon. Who receives coverage? Whose voices and achievements are elevated? What do commentators focus on or render invisible through their language choices? What stereotypes are perpetuated when journalists interview or write about triathletes? These questions are important to answer and understand as they can and do have a profound effect on our individual and cultural understanding of the barriers facing athletes with marginalized identities. This panel will explore these issues and offer suggestions on what we can do to be critical consumers of sports media. How can we better understand the influence of systemic sexism, racism, transphobia, and misogyny on sports media and its effect on our view of triathlon and sport in general?
