Katie Zaferes is a 2 x Olympic Medalist in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where she earned Bronze in the individual event and was part of the USA Mixed Relay that won Silver. She is the 2019 World Champion and also raced in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Katie grew up in Hampstead, MD playing soccer, lacrosse, swimming as well as running track and cross county. After graduating high school Katie was first introduced to triathlon in 2007 when she did a race with her dad on Father’s Day. Katie then went on to run Division I at Syracuse University where she raced cross country and track with the Orange. In 2012 Katie was recruited by the USAT Collegiate Recruitment Program, a program that identifies athletes who run Division I and have a background in swimming. In 2013 she began her first year as a professional triathlete and has gone on to be on many World Triathlon Championship Series podiums, Super League Triathlon podiums and compete in two Olympics. Katie is coached by Joel Filliol and trains with an international training squad that trains and races all over the world. Katie is married to Tommy Zaferes who she met at a race in Tisjvaurous Hungary and the two of them continue to travel and train together while Tommy now works as a photographer at all of the races. The couple now lives in Cary, North Carolina where they are looking forward to spend more time at home!
